Orthographic Projection (Cartography) $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An orthographic projection is a map projection of cartography. Like the stereographic projection and gnomonic projection, orthographic projection is a perspective (or azimuthal) projection, in which the sphere is projected onto a tangent plane or secant plane. The point of perspective for the Orthographic projection is at infinite distance. It depicts a hemisphere of the globe as it appears from outer space, where the horizon is a great circle. The shapes and areas are distorted, particularly near the edges, but distances are preserved along parallels (Snyder 1987, 1993). Orthographic projection was called analemma by the Greeks (see Ptolemy). The current name was adopted in 1613 by Francois dAiguillon of Antwerp, though it is thought to originate from the Roman writer and architect Vitruvius. Albrecht Durer prepared the first known polar and equatorial Orthographic maps of the Earth. Photographs of the Earth and other planets from spacecraft have inspired renewed interest in the Orthographic projection in astronomy and planetary science. Change Detection in Animated Choropleth Maps. $115.71 Computer animation enables cartographers to visualize timeseries data as never before; we can build dynamic map sequences that congruently depict change over time. However, mapreaders have difficulty comprehending these animations, and they often fail to detect important changes between adjacent scenes, this is called change blindness. These potentially overwhelming perceptual burdens, such as change blindness, threaten the effectiveness of animated maps in which several important changes can occur simultaneously throughout the display. Animated maps also require viewers to not only notice changes but also understand the transitions within these dynamic displays. Graphic interpolation between display frames, also known as inbetweening or tweening, smoothes transitions and lengthens the duration of the transition between scenes in an animated map series. Previous cartographic literature suggests tweening as one potential solution for change blindness in animated cartography. This thesis tested the influence of change blindness on animated choropleth map reading and evaluated the influence of tweening to increase change detection abilities of map readers. Empirical results from this research indicate that map readers, 1) have difficulty detecting changes in these types of maps, 2) often fail to fully comprehend these maps, and 3) are influenced by the use of tweening between the scenes of the animated map.
