A small part of Russia (not on maps) that is still communist?

I heard from a friend that there is a very tiny part of Russia that still follows communism, but that it is not on any maps. The only way people know about it is because you’ll drive down this country road, then hit a big metal wall. Anyone know what this place is called or where to get info on it?

I guess that depends on your definition of “Communist”. Since even the communists can’t agree on the definition – and none of them agree with Daniel Webster, I’ll go with those who seem to consider themselves communist.

There is a place – it isn’t a part of Russia, but it IS a part of the former soviet union, and it insists that it IS a part of the Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics. If you travel through it, you will even see signs that include CCCP (the Cyrillic form of USSR). It is one of the breakaway provinces – this one is known as Transnistria, but it calls itself Pridnestrovie Molvadian Republic. It is the tiny sliver of land in former soviet republic of Moldova that is east of the Dniester River. Tiny is right – 4,163 square kilometers (1607 square miles) and total population estimated at 537,000. The population is about 30% ethnic Russians – almost all of whom carry 3 passports: Pridnestrovie, Moldova, and Russia. That made going through passport control amusing at times – “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe ….” I felt positively boring because I had only one!

They are quite enthusiastic in their desire to rejoin the Soviet Union, bitterly disappointed that they share no border with Russia, and become momentarily and profoundly deaf when reminded that the Soviet Union voted itself out of existence on December 25, 1991.

Also, the former soviet republic of Moldova had a parliamentary majority of members of the Communist Party between 1998 and July 2009. The disputed elections of April 2009 caused some rather entertaining antics in downtown Kishinev for a couple of days. According to Wikipedia, Moldova is the only European country officially run by a government that calls itself “communist”.

I didn’t see any metal walls in either place. Passport control is about as boring as it is at JFK – just colder as it is outdoors.

Russia Dock Woodland $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Russia Dock Woodland is a long narrow park in Rotherhithe, London, created by the infilling of one of the former Surrey Commercial Docks. The former Russia Dock was originally used for the importing of timber from Norway, Russia and Sweden. The soft wood, known as deal wood, was mostly used for paper for prints and for furniture. Following the closure of the docks in the 1970s, the area was redeveloped by the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC). Russia Dock was infilled (save for a thin stream through the woodland) and planted as a 34.5acre (140,000 m2) woodland in 1980. It still contains surviving dock features including the retaining wall capstones, depth gauges, bollards, mooring chains and tracks.
