Tuscany Italy Touring

Necessary for a tour guide in italy?
My husband and I are visiting Italy this May and we are planning to visit Rome, Florence, Tuscany area and Venice. Do we need to sign up for a tour guide? We’d rather just tour those cities ourselves, but would it be too difficult to find those must see sights on our own? Thanks!
I travelled there by myself and did not use a guide, except on a guided day tour from Rome to Pompeii which was good.
There are lots of options in that area. In that you can pre-book trips (eg www.viator.com or octopustravel.com) or just book when you get there (you can see places scattered around or try the infomation centre). They are good for giving information about places you are travelling and also save on entry time as you don’t queue for as long..or you don’t seem too) There are the double decker buses also that you can hop on and off (usually a 24hr ticket and its good for viewing the main sights, transport and earphones that you plug in for info).
A good travel book is essential and I would read up about the places. I admit that I did not do much for Rome and accidently stumbled upon a couple of places and did not realise their significance until later eg Trevi fountain, Roman Forum!! Some maps also have places to see. I did find a good map which was laminated so it was great for folding and using in the rain (which it seem to do a lot..I went in April) and it had the top 10 places in the city to see which I tried to see. The map is kind of vital when wandering around and means you can go and wander when you want!
