hiking in the grand canyon for free?

i wanted to take a few days to hike in the grand canyon, but guided tours are way to expensive. 3 days for $500? haha. can i just get a map and walk a trail? is it pretty easy to navigate? a 2 or 3 day trail would be best. also, how much does it cost to reserve a campground?

A couple of things
The legal stuff:
To spend any amount of nights camped below the Rim in GCNP you will need to have in your possession something called a Backcountry Use Permit
While the cost for getting one is minimal
$10.00 permit fee + $5.00 per person per night
Getting a permit for when & where you want to camp can be difficult at times
Take a couple of minutes and work your way thru this link

The practical stuff:
If I made the rules then I would ban camping below the Redwall from 5/15 to 9/15
Why?
Because the Inner Canyon is hotter than Hell during those times ,it’s also pretty much waterless and devoid of any kind of shade unless you play desert rat boy and use rock overhangs to get out of the sun
Then of course there is the issue of getting caught in wide open spaces during regular afternoon T -storms >Man you haven’t lived until you’ve been close enough to a lightning strike to have all >and I do mean ALL>of the hair on your body stand straight out.
I’m going to suggest that you forget about the idea of doing multi -day Inner Canyon hikes and instead do day hikes that stay above the Redwall
As far as above the Rim Campsites go:
Desert View CG is a really cool place to spend a couple of nights
Be careful out there and do not make the mistake of underestimating the danger of the Canyon
