Road Maps Rand Mcnally
Now that we have GPS, MapQuest, Google, and CitySearch?
do you still use the old fashioned Rand McNally maps, AAA Triptiks, and state map guides?
we are going on a family road trip and I think a map would be a good experience for the children to use while we drive.
I typically use both modern electronic/digital maps and traditional print maps. GPS is very convenient, but loss of signal during storms or being ‘out of range’ can be a pain, so a hard copy map is handy as a back up. Google, Yahoo, and MapQuest are nice, I really like the feature that shows nearby restaurants, etc.; but these maps can be incorrect. So; I’ll pick up a State map as a back up. I haven’t used a AAA TripTik for two years; these maps are fun, but they are huge…..I can access AAA online; and so I can now do an electronic TripTik.
Lena I think carrying and using print maps is a skill that should be encouraged! It might be fun if each kid who is traveling with you has his or her own map and maybe even a simple compass. The kids and the adults could ‘map out the route’, and maybe even make little notes on the maps. Older kids could even help figure out fuel consumption; how many miles per gallon you are getting (math skills!).
My husband and I have done “orienteering” courses/paths a couple of times; you use a map and compass to follow a trail and then record the time it took to finish. You all could plot an course and have the kids follow along with their maps and compasses.
