Is pokemon crystal for the Game boy colour similar to red, blue and yellow?

What I mean is:
Are the battles nearly the same on crystal as yellow
Are the house positions ike where you start in new bark town, the town is the same.
Basically, what I mean is: Is the game boy colour version of pokemon crystal not like the game boy advance version.

Basically the same as gold/silver except you can play as a girl and etc.
