It is an open standard, and is used throughout the world. Cipriano Sanchez, a Spanish cartographer had charted Yala in his maps in 1560. Henry Engelbrecht, the last Boer prisoner in Ceylon was appointed the first park warden of Yala. There are six national parks and three wildlife sanctuaries in the adjacent area of Yala.
