Matagorda began life as the United States Navy Barnegatclass seaplane tender USS Matagorda (AVP22). She was laid down on 6 September 1940 at the Boston Navy Yard at Boston, Massachusetts, launched on 18 March 1941, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on 16 December 1941. She operated in the Caribbean and Atlantic during World War II. In July 1945 she began conversion to a press information ship, designated AG122, for use in the scheduled 19451946 invasion of Japan, but was converted back into a seaplane tender when the end of the war made the invasion unnecessary. Kennedy International Airport. Jamaica Bay is located on the southwestern tip of Long Island in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, New York City, and the town of Hempstead, New York/hamlet of Inwood. The bay connects with Lower New York Bay to the west through Rockaway Inlet and is the westernmost of the coastal lagoons on the south shore of Long Island. Maps of the city as late as 1910 identify the bay as Grassy Bay. Jamaica Bay is located adjacent to the confluence of the New York Bight and New York Bay, and is at the turning point of the primarily eastwest oriented coastline of New England and Long Island and the northsouth oriented coastline of the midAtlantic coast. The name derives from Jameco, a corruption of a word in one of the Lenape languages, spoken by the Native Americans who once lived in the area.
