Map Virgin Islands
Are there actually Americans who don’t know that Puerto Rico is part of the United States?
I mentioned to one of my secretaries that I would be attending a trade conference in Puerto Rico, and she made some comment about me making sure my passport was in order.
I was like, what? You know that Puerto Rico is part of America, right? Puerto Ricans are US citizens. Not only that, but there are four million of them! They make up 1.2% of the entire population of the United States. Puerto Rico would be the nation’s 27th-largest state.
She then made it clear that, no, she was not aware of these facts.
Is this common, or is she just stupid?
And anyway, why does it seem like most maps of the US exclude our five inhabited territories (Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands)?
Puerto Ricans, US Virgin Islanders, Guamanians, and Northern Marianans are all full US citizens, while American Samoans are US nationals eligible to become citizens.
Why are some Americans apparently ignorant of this?
Those that are in denial, are either ignorant, or choose to deny the truth.
