Map Northeastern States
Why is New Hampshire more independent than its northeastern neighbors?
I know the state has a history of being more libertarian and independent. Election maps consistently show this state as being a toss up or barely Democrat. What is it about the people of this state that makes them less like to break for the Dems then all the states surrounding it? What is the political ideology like among folks there? Also which party does better in local elections?
Agree with JCCE…Republicans here and in Maine are old-line conservatives. New Hampshire is a state of fiscal conservatives and social…well, neither conservatives nor liberals…kind of ‘don’t mess in my business and I won’t mess in yours’…it used to be the Republican party was like that, but now it seems to be that the Democrats fit that description better (we keep expecting to hear reports for ice in Hell too!).
We have given the current “Republican” poseurs as much benefit of the doubt as we can: our credulity has been stretched to the breaking point. Every single old-line Republican that I know is fed up with the way the current crop of leaders has turned the GOP into the party of over-spending, intrusive social policies, wire-tapping without warrants, taking us needlessly to war in one country while , “oh, darn”, forgetting to go after bin Laden, our real enemy…these things are not what real Republicans would do, yet this purportedly Republican administration has done all that and more. Many of us are holding our noses, but we will not vote for any more of this crap from the folks who stole the GOP…we are voting for Obama. Almost all of the Republican that I know in this state (there are two holdouts) will be doing so.
Of the current administration, even my lifelong-Republican, born-and-raised in New Hampshire husband says “They should all be impeached and thrown in jail”.
The voters here didn’t change, the two parties did, and maybe we were just a little faster to notice it…we are kind of hyper-aware of national politics here, at least every 4 years…no, three years…no, two years 
In local elections, folks here pretty much vote for whichever candidate they think is best…I know very few folks who vote straight party lines (really only those same two who are still going to vote for McCain!). Neither party is really very strong in this state anyway…last count I heard was 31% Republicans, 31% Democrats, 38% unenrolled.
