Dogs in Mesoamerican Folklore and Myth

Dogs in Mesoamerican Folklore and Myth

$97.19

Dogs have occupied a powerful place in Mesoamerican folklore and myth since at least the Classic Period right through to modern times. A common belief across the Mesoamerican region is that a dog carries the newly deceased across a body of water in the afterlife. Dogs appear in underworld scenes painted on Maya pottery dating to the Classic Period and even earlier than this, in the Preclassic, the Chupicaro buried dogs with the dead. In the great Classic Period metropolis of Teotihuacan, 14 human bodies were deposited in a cave, most of them children, together with the bodies of three dogs to guide them on their path to the underworld. In many versions of the 20day cycle of the Mesoamerican calendar, the tenth day bears the name dog. This is itzcuintli in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, tzi in the Kiche Maya language and oc in Yucatec Maya. Among the Mixtecs, the tenth day was taken by the coyote, ua. The Mesoamerican Indian Languages

The Mesoamerican Indian Languages

$79.66

At least a hundred indigenous Indian languages are known to have been spoken in Mesoamerica, the cultural area that includes most of Mexico and part of South America, but it is only in the past fifty years that many of them have been adequately described. For some we still have no more than a partial description, often in an obscure source. Professor Su rez draws together this considerable mass of scholarship in a general survey that will provide an invaluable source of reference. The approach is primarily descriptive, and a major part of the volume is concerned with synchronic descriptions of phonology, morphology and syntax. The volume will be of interest and importance both to general linguists and to others with a serious interest in Mesoamerican culture and society. Author: Suarez, Jorge A./ Anderson, S. R./ Bresnan, J. Series Title: Cambridge Language Surveys Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 228 Publication Date: 1983/04/14 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.51 inches

Cholula (Mesoamerican Site)

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Cholula (Nahuatl: Chollln), was an important city of preColumbian Mesoamerica, dating back to at least the 2nd century BCE, with settlement as a village going back at least some thousand years earlier. Cholula grew from a small village to a regional center between 600 and 700 CE. During this period, Cholula was a major center contemporaneous with Teotihuacan and seems to have avoided, at least partially, that citys fate of violent destruction at the end of the Mesoamerican Classic period. Between 700 and 750 CE, Cholula was taken over by the OlmecaXicalanca, and the town grew rapidly, although overshadowed by Cacaxtla. The OlmecaXicalanca were in 1292 in turn displaced by the ToltecaChichimeca. In 1359, the nearby kingdom of Huexotzingo annexed Cholula.
