European Colonization of the Americas $164.1 The start of the European colonization of the Americas is typically dated to 1492, although there was at least one earlier colonization effort. The first known Europeans to reach the Americas were the Vikings (Norse) during the 11th century, who established several colonies in Greenland and one shortlived settlement at LAnse aux Meadows (51N) in the area the Norse called Vinland, present day Newfoundland. Settlements in Greenland survived for several centuries, during which time the Greenland Norse and the Inuit people experienced mostly hostile contact. By the end of the 15th century, the Norse Greenland settlements had collapsed. In 1492, a Spanish expedition headed by Christopher Columbus reached the Americas, after which European exploration and colonization rapidly expanded, first through much of the Caribbean Sea region (including the islands of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Cuba) and, early in the 16th century, parts of the mainlands of North and South America. Although Christopher Columbus is credited for discovering America, he was preceded by John Cabot who was the first to land in North America (1497). Portuguese Colonization of the Americas $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Portugal was the leading country in the European exploration of the world in the 15th century. The Treaty of Tordesillas split the New World into Spanish and Portuguese zones in 1494. Portugal colonised parts of South America (mostly Brazil), but there were some failed attempts to settle in North America in todays Canada. In 1501 and 1502 the CorteReal brothers explored Newfoundland and Labrador and claimed it to the Portuguese Crown. Soon, in 1506, king Manuel I created taxes for the fisheries of cod in Newfoundland. Joao Alvares Fagundes colony in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia was only five years old when it was abandoned. Hostility from the natives was the main cause of the projects failure. GroundWater Exploration $108.33 A twodimensional shallow resistivity survey of the groundwater potential of Ahmadu Bello University, Kongo Campus, Zaria Kaduna State, Nigeria using electrical imaging technique was carried out. Six image lines were measured at different strategic locations of the study area based on the fractured map of the area and Borehole log data information obtained from the area. Results from the interpretation of the data collected suggest 24 layers in the area studied. The resistivity value for the first layer (Topsoil) varies from 10 to 400 ohmm with thickness ranging from 114m. The second layer (Weathered Basement) has resistivity values between 120 and 500 ohmm and thickness ranging from 511m. The third layer (Fractured basement) has resistivity values ranging from 5001000 ohmm and thickness between 3 and 6m. The fourth layer is the Fresh Basement (Bedrock) has resistivity values greater than 1000 ohmm and infinite thickness. The southwest (SW) of the study area does represent a promising Aquifer with reasonable thickness of Weathered Basement and Fractured Zone. Also, the area seems to be a zone of high hydraulic conductivity because of its low resistivity values. Intelligent Exploration for Genetic Algorithms $96.59 Exploration vs. exploitation is a well known issue in Evolutionary Algorithms. Accordingly, an unbalanced search can lead to premature convergence. GASOM, a novel Genetic Algorithm, addresses this problem by intelligent exploration techniques. The approach uses SelfOrganizing Maps to mine data from the evolution process. The information obtained is successfully utilized to enhance the search strategy and confront genetic drift. This way, local optima are avoided and exploratory power is maintained. The evaluation of GASOM on well known problems shows that it effectively prevents premature convergence and seeks the global optimum. Particularly in deceptive and missleading functions it showed outstanding performance. Additionally, representing the search history by the SelfOrganizing Map provides a visually pleasing insight into the state and course of evolution. Author: Amor, Heni Ben Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 72 Publication Date: 2008/07/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.15 inches |
