is there a modern-day counterpart to “here there be serpents”?
on old european maps before the world was discovered, mapmakers wrote “here there be serpents” in the uncharted waters of the atlantic.
this is intriguing: was it done to indicate the unknown aspects of the world, or to discourage exploration? in either case, the possible existence of sea monsters HAD to have some impact on the seafarers and explorers of the 1300s. and as the explored world grew, i’m sure the serpents were pushed further and further, to the point of extinction.
here there be serpents… no more. yet is there a modern-day counterpart to “here there be serpents”, a warning to those who might tread where the edge of the world looms large? if so, where might it be? what are the dangers? who needs to be warned?
Y2K, WMD, Bird Flu, Level Orange, over population, asteroid impact, melting ice-caps, etc., etc., etc.
We don’t (usually) call them serpents anymore, but the culture of fear still pervades.
