Map Early Civilizations

What RPG game is this?
I am not sure what year this game was from except that it is sometime from 1985-1999. The port is PC by the way.
In the game it is a early RPG. You get to select your character and three others that you can play as.
All I can remember about the plot is that you somehow insult an empire or something and are thrown into a portal to another world which is underground or something (the world is something like Are**** something, which should be the title of the game). The world is then found to be a large civilization, where you walk around and fight people in a medieval setting with castles and caves. The point of the game is that you have to get back to your own world somehow.
There is a combat system similar to Fallout, except that on the large map you appear smaller as small sprites move towards you, and then you go into a turn-based battle. I know that there were a ton of goblin monsters, which had a fortress and several outposts.
Does anybody know what game this is?
You might be thinking of the game Avernum
