Involvement Latin America

20th century US imperialism in Latin America: beneficial or harmful?
So, between the 19th and mid-20th centuries, do you think US involvement in Latin America benefited or harmed the Latin American people?
AND
If it benefited, which of the following events do you think helped the most?
1823: Monroe Doctrine
1898: Spanish-American War
1903: US helps Panamanians win independence
1904: Roosevelt Corollary
1914: completion of Panama Canal
Well, I think i’m pretty qualified to answer this question, taking into account that i have lived in Venezuela, the United States, and currently, Colombia. Before i go on, it must be pointed out that there is no right answer to this question, but here are the facts. first and foremost, it is obvious that all of the events stated above were in america’s best interest. not an insult, just true. the monroe doctrine warned other countries not to intervene in the americas. why? because the united states wanted more control over the region. it obviously was to some advantage for the region since it also greatly increased trade in the underdeveloped nations. the spanish-american war simply spread us leverage over the region, gaining (if i am not wrong) territories like the phillipines and puerto rico. the united states DID help the panamanians win their indepedence, but only because colombia, which ruled over venezuela as well, was becoming too powerful. the corollary also helped to increase trade, since it increased the chances of return for investors. yet: Presidents cited the Roosevelt Corollary as justification for U.S. intervention in Cuba (1906-1910), Nicaragua (1909-1911, 1912-1925 and 1926-1933), Haiti (1915-1934), and the Dominican Republic (1916-1924) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_Corollary). finally, the completion of the panama canal was a gigantic step for extending and improving world trade, but as long as the united states controlled it, the country that owned the land (panama) was recieving little if not none of the profits from the passageway. in addition, in the 20th century, this imperialism did great harm to south and central america. the united state placed tyrants into power, such as Pinochet in Chile, and Noriega in Panama, both of which became huge fiascoes for the U.S.

Financial Crisis in Latin America $133.82 The purpose of this book is to discuss the importance of foreign banks for the Latin American emerging markets financial sectors and the consequences of periods of financial and economic crisis for those banks, putting special emphasis on the situation of Spanish Banco Santander and BBVA. The macroeconomic determinants of recent periods of crisis in Latin America are analyzed and positive future growth perspectives are examined. The fact that Spanish banks did not cut and run in times of crisis, but stayed in the region and increased their presence has to be especially stressed. Latin America and Underdevelopment $42.9 In his second book, Andre Gunder Frank expands on the theme presented in his influential study Capitalism and Underdevelopment in Latin America. It is the colonial structure of world capitalism, in his view, which produced and maintains the underdevelopment characteristic of Latin America and the rest of the Third World. This colonial structure penetrates everywhere in Latin America, forming and transforming all its features in obedience to its own imperatives and thereby imposing upon the region those characteristic features of poverty and backwardness which are not primarily the remnants of an ancient feudal past but the direct products of capitalism. This development of underdevelopment will persist, Frank argues, until the people of Latin America free themselves from world capitalism by means of revolution. Author: Frank, Andre G.
