How to ask a girl to hang out if I am currently out of town?

I am friends with this girl at school. We talk often but I’m currently out of town for the summer. I will visit but will not be really back until I start college. I am planing to ask her the next time we talk over the phone if she wants to hang out when I come back (visit) in town. I want to get to know her better but I am sure there has to be a better way to ask. How do I ask her?

Maybe text her or call her, say you were thinking about her because you saw something that made you think of her. Say you would like to hang out with her the next time you are in town because you think she is cool and would like to hang out.
