Grid Reference $103.56 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Grid references define locations on maps using Cartesian coordinates. Grid lines on maps define the coordinate system, and are numbered to provide a unique reference to features. Grid systems vary, but the most common is a square grid with grid lines numbered sequentially from the origin at the bottom left of the map. The grid numbers on the eastwest (horizontal) axis are called Eastings, and the grid numbers on the northsouth (vertical) axis are called Northings. Numerical grid references consist of an even number of digits. Eastings are given before Northings. Thus in a 6 digit grid reference 123456, the Easting component is 123 and the Northing component is 456. Grids may be arbitrary, or based on specific distances, for example the United Kingdom Ordnance Survey maps use a onekilometre square grid spacing. Many maps have grid coordinates that make it easier to locate where something is. A vertical grid line is known as longitude and a horizontal line is known as latitude. Symbols and keys are important parts of maps. A scale helps us know how far apart things are from each other in real life. Compasses also help us know the direction on a map. There are many different types of maps such as street maps tourist maps population maps and landuse maps. Author: Moira Anderson. Format: Paperback. Pages: 32. Publish Date: October 10 2008. British National Grid Reference System $53.63 The British national grid reference system is a system of geographic grid references commonly used in Great Britain, different from using latitude and longitude. The Ordnance Survey devised the national grid reference system, and it is heavily used in their survey data, and in maps based on those surveys. Grid references are also commonly quoted in other publications and data sources, such as guide books or government planning documents.
