Driving Cross Country from NYC to Portland Late October…?

My finace and I are getting married and then driving cross country to start our new life in Portland.

We have about 10 days and a $3000 budget.

I want to plan the trip so we can hit some nice places on the way.

We’re not into super touristy things, we are more into nature and the outdoors. I’m thinking about doing the southern route, some of Route 66 and then up the California coast, and up through Oregon.

Certainly don’t want to stare at cornfields for 9 hours a day!

Any suggestions on places to stop that are romantic/scenic?

I’ll be calling AAA for maps when I figure out what route I want to take…

I love road trips. I’m so very jealous. Congratulations on your new life. You know? I think that you may regret that southern route. Of course. The whole inner United States is going to be dull boring wheat fields.. And they do suck. But instead of driving north through Cali? I strongly strongly recommend coming north through Arizona and going through Flagstaff and cutting though the Grand Canyon.. Then coming up through Colorado and Wyoming.. Wyoming is really unexciting but it’ll be totally worth it when you get to Montana. I love that state. It’s probably my favorite of all I’ve seen. You can go through yellowstone. The Rocky Mountains are such a sight. And if you go North even farther. There is a little town just southwest of Missoula called Lolo Hot springs? It’s so romantic. There is a pool outdoors and you can go swimming in the hot springs. And its just beautiful being in the middle of the mountains. Then just hit the 90 going west.. And go straight through Spokan and then down on 395? (i think) Because you really need to come in through the Columbia Gorge.
